Navigational tools ...
We recommend you use ADR to view the map. But, if you are using a browser to view the map, and if the map is not displayed on the screen and you want to see it while you read this information, click here to display the map in a new browser window. (The map will only display correctly if you have already installed all the components).
- With the map displayed, position your cursor over the map and click on it with your left mouse button (this focuses on the map). Then to access the navigational menu click your right mouse button (right-click). A menu will appear with menu items that lets you "Zoom", "Pan", and do a number of other things to navigate about the map.
- To zoom in and out, select "Zoom" from the right-click menu and with the left mouse button depressed drag your mouse up and down.
- To pan about the map, select "Pan" and with the left button depressed drag the mouse over the map. Releasing the mouse and then depressing again, lets you pan to new areas of the map.
- The purple shutter icons on the map mean there is a hotlink to a photo of this location.
This is what the icon looks like:
CTRL+click (depress the CRTL key while clicking your left mouse button) on the shutter icon to display a photo of the location. If you are using a browser, your cursor may change to a pointing finger cursor. Click on the icon to display the photo. These photos have been contributed by members of the Great North Road (GNR) website, they date from the 1930s to recent times.
- Click anywhere with your left mouse button to clear the menu.
Other tips on using the map
- Using the right-click menu over the map, you can pan and zoom to navigate around the map and to get better detailed views of specific areas. For example, to use the "Zoom to Rectangle" menu item, with your mouse specify a rectangle over an area, such as the city centre. When you release the mouse you will get a zoomed-in view of Nkana-Kitwe's city centre.
- If you are using a browser to view the map, the "Save as" menu item on the right-click menu, will allow you to save a copy of the Nkana-Kitwe DWF file to your computer. Then you can use the AutoCADŽ Design Review (ADR) plug-in to view the map independently of the browser.
- You can turn off certain layers in the map by using the Layers pallette in the Navigator Pane. One way to get to the Navigator Pane is through the right-click menu: Show > Navigator Pane. For example, if you want to see the map without the purple shutter icons (hotlinks), just click the yellow light bulb next to the Hotlinks layer and it turns off. Click it back to turn it on. You can do this with any layer.
- Investigate all the menus from the menu bar and from the right-click menu on the map. You can make many adjustments and there are a myriad features available. For example to display a complete white background for the sides of the map, click Show > Paper background to turn the appearance of a paper background off.
- On the reverse side of the original printed map is an index and legend. The index contains grid information for all features on the map. The legend explains how to use the grid to locate features on the map. You can view PDF versions of this information by clicking on the following links:
